Each button can include text, a pre-programmed symbol, and/or a custom symbol for a word. The design within TouchChat is color coded, allowing categorization by parts of speech. Pages are dynamic (moving from one to another) upon selection, utilizing most commonly used words that relate to the initial selection. This application is Core Vocab based, allowing the individual opportunity to build upon their messages through building of sentences ( see previous blog post regarding core vocabulary vs fringe vocabulary) How does TouchChat work? The software is designed to include both English and Spanish options, with a variety of different voices for the individual to choose from. The speech output feature encourages verbal speech by providing the individual with a language model for the message they’re communicating. TouchChat provides speech output when selecting a button. One of these apps is called TouchChat, it can be downloaded and used on an iPad to help the user express their wants and needs. There are many different types of applications that can be used to help those with difficulties speaking to communicate. An AAC provides solutions for those with significant and complex communication disorder to express themselves. One thing we did talk about was specifying the app for CG specifically for certain tasks. He typically does better in this activity, but I thought it was great for the purpose of this assignment because it shows the struggle between user and teacher and how things can sometimes be unsuccessful. His speech therapist attempts to prompt him, and eventually uses hand over hand. He is prompted, while playing a game with his friends, to use “your turn /my turn”, but is choosing to avoid the task, because he would prefer to ask for preferred items. As you can see in the video he frequently requests that he wants his binky, which is an “at home” item. With the main goal in focus, of him being able to communicate his wants and needs, we want to shift the focus on how to do that appropriately. This process and device are very new to CG. CG also uses TouchChat HD during whole and small group activities, including singing, counting, calendar, etc, to participate in regular education. We are also beginning to use his app to socialize with peers, playing games (as seen in the video, “Your turn, my turn”). When doing discrete trials, upon completing a task, he will either as for a break (roll, squeeze, tickle, walk, etc) or a treat (cookie, cheerio, veggie stick, etc). He currently is prompted to use it frequently, but, will ask for certain things independently. With CG becoming more familiar with navigating the app and understanding that this is how he can communicate, we began to use it throughout the school day. During school we currently use TouchChat HD to prompt CG to ask for breaks, request wants/needs, participate in whole and small group activities, answer questions, and socialize with peers. He currently uses his AAC device with TouchChat HD with private speech, at home with ABA services and throughout his school day with us.
